Should You Rekey or Replace?

Two ways to change your locks, and they are not the same. Here is the difference between rekeying and replacing and how to know which one your Torquay home or business needs.

The Difference

Rekey or Replace: What Is the Difference?

People often use the two terms as if they mean the same thing, but they are quite different jobs. Rekeying keeps your existing lock and changes its internal pins so the old keys no longer work, then cuts you a fresh set to match. The lock on the door stays put; only the key that opens it changes. It is usually quicker and cheaper because you are not paying for new hardware.

Replacing means removing the lock entirely and fitting a new one. You would do this procedure when the existing lock is worn, damaged or too basic for the door, or when you want to upgrade your security or change the style. Both jobs achieve the same core result of stopping old keys from working, so the right choice depends on the condition of your locks and what you want them to do.

The Short Answer

When Each One Makes Sense

As a rule, rekey when your locks are in excellent working order and you simply want to cancel the old keys, after moving in, losing a key or having staff leave. It is the cost-effective choice and often the smarter one, especially if you want several doors to open with a single key.

Replace when the hardware itself is the problem, a worn lock, sticking or damaged, or one that is too basic for the security you want. If you’re unsure which camp your locks fall into, we can easily work it out together and will only suggest replacing what genuinely needs it.

How to Decide

Rekey or Replace: Common Questions

A few of the questions Torquay locals ask us most when they are deciding between rekeying and replacing their locks.

Usually, yes. Because rekeying keeps your existing hardware and only changes the internal pins and keys, you avoid the cost of new locks. Replacing means paying for the new hardware as well as the fitting. The exact difference depends on how many locks are involved and their type, so the best approach is an upfront quote based on your actual doors.

Most standard locks in excellent condition can be rekeyed. The main exceptions are locks that are worn, damaged or faulty, since rekeying a failing lock just leaves you with a failing lock and fresh keys. In those cases, replacing is the better value. If a lock cannot be rekeyed, we will tell you why and what your options are.

They can. Rekeying lets us key multiple locks alike so a single key opens every door, which many people find far more convenient than carrying several keys. This method works best when the locks are the same type or compatible. It is one of the handier things rekeying can do, and it’s worth asking about if you are juggling multiple keys.

For cancelling old keys, yes. Once a lock is rekeyed, any previous key is useless, exactly as it would be with a brand new lock. The difference is purely about the hardware itself. If your existing lock is a good quality, well-functioning unit, rekeying gives you the same security for less. If the lock is weak or worn, that is when replacing it is the safer call.

It comes down to two questions: are your locks in good condition, and do you want them to do anything more than they do now? Good locks plus no need for an upgrade usually means rekey. Worn locks or a wish for better security usually means replace. If you would rather not guess, we are happy to take a look and recommend the sensible option.
